Migration Notes

The migration is one-way:

.xls -> LegacyWorkbookLoader -> ScenarioParameters -> canonical SQLite

ecosys.data imports neither xlrd nor ecosys.legacy_workbook. It loads canonical English IDs and Astropy quantities directly from SQLite. export_excel_data.legacy_adapter reconstructs historical parameter records for export-equivalence tests; it is not used by the simulation engine.

The packaged databases (one per parameter set, see ecosys.data.PARAMETER_SETS) are rebuilt with:

python -m export_excel_data --all

Each database's logical digest is based on schema definitions, ordered tables, columns and normalized row values. Volatile creation time and the digest field itself are excluded, so equivalent repeated exports have the same digest even if SQLite page bytes differ.

Known limitations:

  • True Excel comments/notes were not exposed in the bundled files by xlrd.
  • Agreement with original-model outputs is distinct from independent physical validation; see validation evidence.
  • Strict workbook-output regression coverage is strongest for Cs-137 and parameter set 1.
  • The compatibility adapter uses legacy aliases to reconstruct historical records; the engine uses canonical IDs.
